HLC Chats With... David Brown!

David Brown lives in Texas and has been cheering for HLC for nearly three years now. He has attended Harvard University, studied Theoretical Physics at the University of Texas, and served our country in the Air Force for more than two years. David is smart, funny, and extremely interesting! When he's not spreading awareness about ALS or helping a good cause, he is practicing Tai Chi. We are very fortunate to know and love Mr. Brown!

(HLC): Do you have a nick name? How did you get it?

(DB): Sasquatch, as I weighed 280 pounds with a full beard and mustache.

(HLC): What is your favorite childhood memory?

(DB): Our family vacations consisted of camping in Colorado and the Gulf of Mexico. I love everything about the outdoors. Fishing was the best and having time with my family was important.

(HLC): Camp HLC is one of our wonderful programs. Have you ever attended a summer camp? If yes, what was your favorite memory about camp?

(DB): Yes, I went camping a lot and loved everything about it. I also went on church retreats and we did cool things like shooting rifles and bows! We are a family of hunters so I really appreciated those activities.

(HLC): Who is your favorite musician?

(DB): One of my favorite musicians is Johnni Levi (who wrote a song especially for me!) and a smooth jazz group called Acoustic Alchemy.

(HLC): Do you have a pet companion? If so, please share his/her name and what you love most about him/her.

(DB): I no longer have any dogs, sadly, but I grew up with many wonderful hunting dogs. They were show dogs and great family members, too.

(HLC): People would be surprised to know that....  (cool fact about you!)

(DB): People would be surprised to know that I was a private investigator for the state of Texas. I also have done a Halo dive (High Altitude-High Opening or military free fall) which means I jumped out of an airplane at 33,000 and opened my parachute after free-falling for a period of time.

(HLC): What is one thing you can share with others about resilience and adversity?

(DB): My parents taught me service above self so I was raised to help others. I believe that we find purpose in helping others and in supporting good causes. I gave so much to St. Jude that I received a personal letter from Marlo Thomas and husband Phil Donohue for my generous donations. I was hoping for an invitation to meet them!

(HLC): And David is a generous supporter of our ALS Chocolate Meltdown! Thank you, David!

(HLC): What's your go to person, book, or movie for inspiration?

(DB): I highly recommend Brian's Song and I am Third.  Both made me cry.  Both are inspirational in many ways.

(HLC): If you have a go to resource (website, blog, etc...) that you think would help others, please share it!

(DB): Patients like Me is a great resource. Jamie Heywood, who lost his brother to ALS, founded it in 2004. Today, PLM is a for profit patient network and real-time research platform. Through the network, patients connect with others who have the same disease or condition and track and share their own experiences with the goal to improve outcomes. Visit patientslikeme.com to learn more.

(HLC): Share something that you want others to know about ALS... (DB): ALS is not the end of the world. I attended a wedding in Thailand in a manual wheelchair and had an experience I will never forget. ALS is not easy, but in the words of my late father, "You can't hit a home run if you don't swing the bat."

Thank you so much Dave for participating in HLC Chats With and for your ongoing support of Hope Loves Company.
