HLC Chats With Gwen Petersen

Thank you, Gwen, for participating in our ALS Awareness Month campaign, HLC Chats With!

We are so fortunate to have Gwen and her husband, Nate, joining us at this year's #CampHLC in California!

Gwen lives in San Francisco, CA, is living with ALS and is an ALS advocate, and discovered HLC through a friend who has attended Camp HLC!

Thank you Gwen and Nate for being a part of the HLC family!

Gwen and her husband, Nate.

(HLC): What is your favorite childhood memory?

(GP): Swimming. I swam competitively and for fun in my free time. Lots of pool parties.

(HLC): Camp HLC is one of our wonderful programs. Have you ever attended summer camp? If yes, what was your favorite memory about camp?

(GP): I have not but my husband and I are planning to volunteer this year!

(HLC): We can't wait to meet both you and Nate at our California camp in November! Thank you for being a part of the Camp HLC team.

(HLC): Who is your favorite musician?

(GP): Bay Area Jazz legend, Bobby Hutcherson. My husband and I were fortunate to see him not long before he passed. He rolled out an oxygen tank on stage and didn't miss a beat when he hit those keys. Adversities aside, he was happy and cracked jokes. I took inspiration in watching him play.

(HLC): What is one thing you can share with others about resilience and adversity?

(GP): After I was diagnosed last year, I dove into research head first. Without participation in ALS research, we can’t move the needle toward a cure. Data will unlock some of the mysteries.

(HLC): What's your go to person, book, or movie for inspiration?

(GP): Not so much for inspiration, more for fun, I love 90's Thriller movies. Some of my favorite: The Game, The Fugitive, The Sixth Sense. That's a lot of 'the's'....

(HLC): If you have a go to resource (website, blog, etc...) that you think would help others, please share it!

(GP): I'm not very active on social media however, I do have a Twitter account and I get a ton of ALS information by following different organizations, patients, researchers, biotech companies, medical centers, etc. Twitter keeps me up to date on research, technology, advocacy, and most importantly, how to get involved. Are you following @HopeLovesCo and did you read the article about fellow ALS warrior, Sara Cooper, serving on HLC's Board of Directors? More pALS should have the opportunity to serve on ALS Boards.

(HLC): Thank you, Gwen! We certainly are fortunate to have Sara serving on our BOD. You can follow Gwen on Twitter: @gwenpetersen7.

(HLC): Do you have a pet companion? If so, please share his/her name and what you love most about him/her.

(GP): Toward end of year, we are welcoming a miniature Goldendoodle into our family. He or she can't come soon enough, I'm nearly bursting at the seams. Granted, there will be challenges but the payoff is worth it.

(HLC): We can't wait to see photos!

(HLC): Share something that you want others to know about ALS.

(GP): This disease is a lot of work. I'm not the best at asking for help but sometimes you have to. Currently, my husband and I are weighing pros and cons of moving because we have stairs. We are doing research on chair lifts and commercial door openers. I've never had to do this before so I'm starting from scratch. There is no road map or resource guide for ALS because everybody's path is different.

Thank you, Gwen, for participating in our #ALSAwarenessMonth campaign, HLC Chats With.
